The Decision To Ban Phones
Students will no longer be able to have cellphones in classrooms starting next year. School officials say these devices can negatively impact the academic success and mental health of students.
The decision was made this morning after speaking with a number of teachers, students and education partners. Surveys were also conducted, with 90 percent of over 60,000 respondents claiming concerns over electronic devices in classrooms

The Banned Devices
The devices banned are:
- Cell phones;
- Smart phones;
- Smart watches;
- Headphones;
- Other personal electronic devices
Though these restrictions are in place, it is up to the school boards to choose how to enforce them. There will also certain exemptions to the rules, such as for medical or special learning reasons. Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides is confident that these changes will improve students’ overall school experience, reducing distractions and cyberbullying (Source: CTV News).
The rules apply to all public charter, separate, public, and francophone school officials
