Alberta Rejects Move Toward Separation
According to unofficial results reported on October 21, approximately 75.3% of voters supported remaining in Canada, while 24.7% supported beginning the legal process toward a future binding separation referendum.
Nearly two million valid votes had been counted on the separation question at the time of reporting.
The referendum did not ask Albertans to vote directly on independence. Instead, voters were deciding whether the province should begin the legal process required to hold a future binding vote on separation.
What Happens Next?
In addition to the separation question, Albertans voted on nine other questions involving immigration policies, provincial programs, and constitutional changes.
The referendum results are non-binding, meaning they do not automatically result in changes to provincial or federal laws.
Elections Alberta is continuing to finalize the vote count, with official results scheduled to be announced on October 29, 2026.
For now, the unofficial results indicate that a substantial majority of participating Albertans favour remaining part of Canada.
