Over 1.3 Million Albertans Have Voted Ahead of Referendum

Alberta is heading into referendum day with some impressive numbers. More than 1.3 million residents have already cast their ballots, showing just how much interest there is in the province’s future.

With Alberta’s provincial referendum taking place on Monday, October 19, 2026, Elections Alberta has released preliminary voting numbers, and they’re getting plenty of attention.

According to Elections Alberta, 1,356,873 Albertans voted before referendum day, either through advance voting locations or special ballots.

That’s approximately 43.1% of all eligible voters in the province, and voting day hasn’t even been counted yet.

Alberta Voters Are Showing Up in Big Numbers

Advance voting took place from October 13 to October 17, giving Albertans five days to cast their ballots before the official referendum date.

Here’s how the numbers break down:

  • 837,791 votes were cast at advance voting locations.
  • 519,082 special ballots were recorded, including mail-in voting.
  • 1,356,873 total ballots were cast ahead of referendum day.
  • 43.1% of eligible voters had already participated.

With more than three million eligible voters across Alberta, these early numbers show a significant level of public participation.

And that’s before counting anyone who heads to the polls on October 19.

How Does This Compare to the Last Provincial Election?

To put these numbers into perspective, Alberta’s 2023 provincial election recorded 809,988 advance and special ballots combined.

That represented approximately 27.5% of eligible voters at the time.

Fast-forward to October 2026, and the province has already recorded 546,885 more early ballots than it did during the 2023 election.

That’s a substantial difference.

However, there’s one important detail worth mentioning. Special ballot rules were different in 2023, meaning the two elections aren’t directly comparable when it comes to mail-in voting.

Still, the overall number of ballots cast before referendum day is significant.

How Does This Compare to the Last Provincial Election?

This year’s referendum gives Albertans the opportunity to weigh in on several important issues affecting the province.

There are 10 questions on the ballot. They cover Alberta’s future in Canada, immigration, and constitutional matters.

One of the most discussed questions asks if Alberta should start a legal process. It would lead to a future binding referendum on leaving Canada.

It is important to know the October 19 referendum is not a vote to leave Canada.

Instead, voters are asked if Alberta should take further steps toward a future vote. Voters will also decide on other provincial issues.

With topics like these on the ballot, it’s clear why many Albertans want to have their say.

What Does This Mean for Calgary?

For Calgarians, the referendum is another opportunity to participate in decisions that could shape Alberta’s future.

Whether you live downtown, in the suburbs, or elsewhere in the city, these issues could affect our province for years.

The high early turnout also shows that many Albertans aren’t waiting until the last minute to make their voices heard.

Of course, the number of ballots cast doesn’t tell us which way people voted.

What it does tell us is that a large portion of the province has already taken part in the democratic process.

When Will We Know the Results?

The official referendum voting day is Monday, October 19, 2026, with polling locations open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Once voting locations across Alberta have closed, Elections Alberta will begin releasing unofficial results as ballots are counted.

The unofficial count is expected to be completed within 48 hours of polls closing.

Official results are scheduled to be announced on October 29.

Until then, the early turnout numbers give Albertans something interesting to talk about.

Alberta Is Making Its Voice Heard

Regardless of where people stand on the issues, one thing is clear: Albertans are participating.

With more than 1.35 million ballots already cast before referendum day, the province is seeing a strong level of early voter engagement.

Now, all eyes are on October 19 to see how many more Albertans head to the polls and what the final results will reveal.
