Paddles Up! Calgary’s Dragon Boat Festival Returns

The Return of a Summer Staple

The beat of the drums is back. This August 9 and 10, Calgary’s beloved Sinopec Dragon Boat Race & Festival hits the water once again at North Glenmore Park. Celebrating its 33rd year, this storied event is more than just a race — it’s a full-blown cultural celebration. With over 1,800 paddlers from more than 60 teams hitting the water, the energy is electric before the boats even launch.

Hosted by the Calgary Dragon Boat Society, the weekend promises nonstop action both on and off the lake. From the colorful team jerseys to the thunder of synchronized paddling, the visual spectacle alone is worth the trip — and thanks to free admission, free parking (at Mount Royal University), and a free shuttle, there’s no reason not to bring the whole crew.

More Than Just a Race

This isn’t your average regatta. The Dragon Boat Festival blends ancient Chinese traditions with Calgary’s contemporary multicultural vibe. Families can take in live performances, visit local vendors, taste a spread of international cuisine, and join in on activities that celebrate diversity and community spirit. It’s a rare kind of festival — one where kids can play, grandparents can relax, and adrenaline junkies can marvel at 12-meter boats slicing through the water at full throttle.

You’ll find family-friendly zones, artisan booths, cultural displays, and — let’s not forget — some serious competition between teams made up of everyone from corporate squads to seasoned racers. The atmosphere is part Olympic trials, part block party, and all heart.

Why You’ll Regret Missing It

In a city known for its big-ticket summer events, this one remains refreshingly accessible and community-focused. There are no gates, no pricey passes, and no stress — just great vibes and better company. Whether you’re a first-timer wondering what a dragon boat even looks like, or a festival regular who knows to bring your lawn chair early, this is the place to soak in Calgary’s lakefront summer culture.

Mark your calendar. Bring your friends. And don’t forget your sunscreen — the 2025 Sinopec Calgary Dragon Boat Festival is coming in hot.
