The Lion King Roars into Calgary

Pride Rock Rises at the Jubilee

This summer, Calgary gets the mane event. From July 31 to August 17, the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium is hosting The Lion King, and yes — it’s as epic as you’ve heard. As the lights dim and Circle of Life thunders through the hall, the auditorium transforms into the Serengeti in full bloom. Giraffes glide past your seat, birds dive from the rafters, and somewhere in the mist, Pride Rock emerges, slow and majestic.

Every inch of this production is built to overwhelm — in the best way possible. It’s the kind of theatrical opening that earns silence, then goosebumps, then a thunderclap of applause.

Broadway’s Elite Creative Powerhouse Hits Calgary

Julie Taymor’s direction changed the game when The Lion King debuted on Broadway. Now, her Tony Award®-winning vision arrives in Calgary in full force, bringing with it stunning costumes, breathtaking puppetry, and visual storytelling so detailed, it turns the stage into something mythic.

Add to that the electric choreography of Garth Fagan, and music from icons Elton John and Tim Rice, and you’ve got a show that commands attention from start to finish. From the thundering drama of Shadowland to the melodic glow of Can You Feel the Love Tonight, every number lands with purpose and power.

This is theatre at its boldest — blending high art, global rhythms, and pop anthems with fearless creativity.

Why This Show Still Packs The House (And Probably Will Forever)

There’s a reason The Lion King has been seen by over 100 million people worldwide. It doesn’t rely on nostalgia — it evolves it. The characters, the movement, the sound — they all strike a chord that cuts across age, culture, and background. It’s a rare show that leaves both the musical veterans and the first-timers in awe.

If you’ve never seen it, this is your moment. If you have? You already know — seeing it again is never the same twice.
